The Botetourt County Courthouse is the fourth structure to occupy the current
site. Fire destroyed an 1845 building in 1970. It was rebuilt with Historical
Fincastle, Inc.'s assistance in 1975. Plans for the 1818 courthouse drawn by
Thomas Jefferson were used in the reconstruction. The Botetourt County
Courthouse has been rebuilt four times. The structure last burned in 1970. . The
building's 1880s fireproof vault protected records dating from 1770.
